Love decorating? What if you could spend all your time in the interiors of your home? A cupola gives exterior surfaces a unique and classic look. It's an easy way to update your home and show everyone how much you care. Additionally, a moderately competent carpenter can easily install one. You can read the complete details below.
First, choose where the cupola is going.
Cupolas are usually placed at the center of a roof's ridge. But that's not always the case. It's not unusual for it to be placed in an asymmetrical manner, especially if you have a front door. Many homeowners will choose to install two or three cupolas. However, they need to be evenly distributed across the roof.
Once you have the basics figured out, it's time for you to start climbing up onto the roof. This is a warning: Although it sounds obvious, you should not be allowed to stand on a roof that is either wet or frozen. While you can walk on your roof if necessary, take it slow.
Take a tape measure or two, and run it along the length of the ridge. Mark the point in the middle or at any other location you choose to put the cupola. Divide the base width of your cupola in half. Measure that distance in front and back of your first marking. Mark each spot.
This area needs to be carefully removed with utility knives. Do not cut into the sheathing.
Then, you can find your roof pitch.
Next, you will need to make a hinge to measure the pitch of your roof. It will also help you to cut your cupola's base. Two 24-inch boards should be joined at the ends. Leave enough room for movement between the boards.
The hinge tool should be placed across the roof ridge. Fix the boards together securely and lift the hinge tool from the roof. This will allow you to calculate the angle of your cupola base.
You can match your roof's pitch by cutting the cupola base.
Your cupola base is square. Because roofs can come with different pitch angles, the manufacturer allows the installer to reduce them to the size they need.
Measure the pitch of your hinge tools using an angle finder, and position it against cupola bases. You can trace this line and then do it again on the opposite side of the cupola. To cut the pieces on each side, use a saw.
Mounting Boards on Your Roof
The cupola will not sit flush against your roof. Instead, you'll attach it to two mounting boards, which you then position above the ridge. You will need two blocks of 2 by 4 inches. Apply silicone on one side.
Install the blocks on the roof by screwing them silicone-side down into the roof. They will fit in the cupola when it is installed. You can do the same with the other side.
Finally, attach and seal your cupola.
The cupola wall should be secured against each mounting board's outside edge. Once the cupola wall is in place, apply silicone sealant along each seam to prevent water infiltration. Now, you can take a walk down to the ground and admire the beautiful accent piece for your home.
